ID Theft

I heard that someone created a false Medical insurance card, how can they get away with it?

For it to work, does it not mean they stole someone else's ID? How would it work? How would they conceal the identity theft from the citizen victim...by changing the mailing address of bills? So if a consumer is paying insurance but is not very sickly, they could go for years being a victim and not really know it?

  1. False Medical Identification cards are becoming more and more unlikely given the fundamental nature of the industry. There are multiple layers of protection on the carrier side to prevent such from occuring. The leading fraud in the nation is symptom magnification which causes billlions of dollars of claims paid. This situation is nominal considering the other issues out there. Your topic however makes a better argument for a universal personal healthcare record which I support 100%. I personally feel we can add a lot of value to our healthcare system by allowing us and any of our treating physcians with a history of our lifetime treatment record, lab results etc...
  2. People should be aware of claims that are being processed under their medical insurance policies - that's why insurance companies send out an Explanation of Benefits every single time a claim is received and processed. Additionally, you always have the right to get a report of claims processed under your account from the insurance company. I used to get requests for those every year around tax time - people used them to determine how much they spent out of pocket on medical expenses for the year for tax purposes.
