ID Theft

FREE 32-Page Report:

My ex got a home phone with my SSN and the $82 debt is on my credit report. Is this id theft even tho is $82?

I don't know where to go cause the phone co. won't help and the local police wants me to travel to where this happened and file a report. I'm in VA, this happened in Puerto Rico!! The PR police says it's not Id theft but he may still use my info and I won't know until it shows on my report!! It's $82 now, but what if it's more later on? I notified the credit agency and is "under investigation". I know id theft is a felony, but does it have to be thousands of dollars in order for the police to do something? I feel ashamed when I tell them the quantity because I don't think they're taking me seriously, and even tho I can pay the $82 I won't because I believe that even if the debt is 25 cents, it wasn't me and I shouldn't have to pay it, you know? What's right is right and what's wrong is just plain wrong, I was victimized by my ex and now by the crime agencies.

  1. Yes, it most certaintly is. I would speak to the police at this point. Who knows what else he is going to do.
  2. you need to contact your credit card companies at least and make them aware of what happened.
  3. i think it is a id theft
  4. yes
  5. Contact the credit bureaus, explain what happened and file a report with them. They will investigate and if you did not make the charges they will remove it. Also ask to be put on fraud alert, this way any charges that look fraudulent will be investigated before they appear on your credit.
  6. Get started on this right away. He will most likely do this again if you let him get away with it.
  7. this is most definately theft and i hope they throw his sorry arse in jail
  8. The telephone company won't do anything? If the account is in your name then order them to turn the service off. As for the police issue, it doesn't matter if it's $1000 or 2 cents! It's ID theft. The problem is your local police department doesn't want to mess around investigating it. Therefore they don't want to write a police report. Unfortunately, some creditors won't accept your word that it's ID Theft. They will require a signed affidavid and a copy of the police report. Call the police and demand that they make a report (even if they don't do anything with it) and get a copy of it. If the police officer who comes doesn't do it, contact the police chief! They have to take it! The first link below is a sample affidavid from the FTC that you can fill out and send to the creditors you are disputing. Read the instructions and follow them. If you do all of these things, you should get through this just fine. Still got questions? Contact me. You already contacted the credit agencies....so if the do the things I've mentioned right now you will be ok. Read the link I supplied below. It will guide you through what is happening, and what you need to do next. Don't keep your hopes up that your hubby will be arrested and tossed in jail for ID theft. This crime is happening all the time, and the police/prosecutors don't have the resources to investigate and prosecute it. The merchant ends up getting hosed for the loss.
