Why would someone steal your vehicle registration and proof of insurance?

Why would anyone want to steal that information. I've heard for identity theft and I've also heard they can get enough information to have keys made for my car and a fake title. What do you think they can do, how can I protect myself, and how can I catch this person in their attempt?

1. to find your address. i saw this exact thing happen on season four of the shield. the woman was later murdered. Have a nice day!

3. They did it to save money and you must report all of this to the cops. Let them get caught in the legal machine.
4. It would be information they could use to assume your identity. Once they have established that they are you, they can then apply for credit cards, personal loans, buy guns, apply for passports and many other devious enterprises which you could end up with all the debt. If you have lost any identifying papers or documents, you should report it to the authorities immediately. After all, you don't want some terrorist booking a flight in your name when he intends taking out another landmark building, do you?
5. Well if i broke into your vehicle and found a garage door opener on the sun visor...I would next look into the glove box and grab the vehicle registration... now i have your address and a way to get in your house. also i could use the personal information to help establish a new identity. anyway...don't leave personal information in your vehicle. get better locks on your house, alarm system, big dog, start neighborhood watch, get a gun.
