ID Theft

Is there a financial alert you can put out if you are afraid of ID theft?

I lost the paperwork for opening a new bank account, and it had a signed check attached to it. It had all my info on it - social sec. #, bank account #s, my home address and my signature. I am worried about identity theft. Is there anything I can do to prevent it or some alert that can go out to the financial world?

  1. Some States have a credit freeze law. That allows you to freeze your credit report when you are not looking for a mortgage or other loan. If your State does not have such a law, then there is pretty much little you can do to prevent identity theft.
  2. If in the U.S. you can put 90 day fraud alert w/ any of the credit bureaus. They will notify other major bureaus.
