What exactly is ID Theft?

Recently, my cousin advised me not to enter my date of birth in Facebook, apparently due to ID Theft issues. However, I can't understand why a DOB will be an issue? Any readers can help with advise?

  1. The less information that you put on the internet the better. Never give out any information that you don't want the entire world (literally) to have access to. Once you put it out in Cyberspace, it's public property worldwide. Just like dumpster diving, but you don't have to leave your house to cover every "dumpster" in the world... Be careful out there.
  2. a birthdate by itself means little. All the other information attached to that does. SS number Address Bank Accounts Etc. ID theft is where someone steals your identity, then uses it to rack up a huge amount of debt. Then you have to spend the next two years trying to sort it all out and get it off your credit report. =============== Life is so simple, but we insist on making it complicated Confucius 551 - 479 BC =============== Peace Jim .
  3. All someone needs is your birthdate and they can obtain a birth certificate on you. THen, all they have to do is take that birth certificate and go get an ID done and it will have your name, and birthdate. They will be walking around pretending to be you. Any bills that are made, and debts unpaid, etc will land on you in your name, then it's going to be up to you to fight the hard battle of the creditors etc. ID theft is so easy to do especially for those who are lower than a snake in the grass. I hope this helps you understand more.
