ID Theft

Does anyone use Life Lock or any other identity theft insurance company?

My husband is convinced that we need to get this. It costs $110 per person per year, and from what I gather, all they do is contact Experian, Transunion and Equifax and tell them that you suspect you might be at risk for identity theft. They provide these companies with 2 phone numbers provided by you. Then if something happens & your identity gets stolen, it's your responsibility to call Lifelock & tell them. If you don't, they won't go to bat for you. If you do everything they tell you to do, they will pay for the legal fees to get your credit straightened out, up to $1,000,000, but they don't reimburse any lost money. Is my understanding correct? If not, what am I missing? Wouldn't it be better to contact the 3 credit companies and put a security freeze on our credit? Yes, it's a hassle if we actually want credit, but then no one can get credit in our name, period. No hassles with laywers and ID theft insurance, because no one can get through to the credit companies.

  1. ID theft insurance companies are pretty much a waste of money. It is much cheaper to freeze your credit. Why drag a third party into the picture. By the way, I heard that the Lifelock guy with his real social security number on the side of that truck, bragging how safe he is from ID theft, has his social security number used for a payday loan. So much for Lifelock!
  2. agree with b dancer
  3. I agree....all LifeLock does is put a freeze on your credit report...you can do this yourself....the only thing I would say is a plus is that they have a one million dollar guarantee....I was under the impression that if they are to monitor it for you not you monitor then call them if something happens LOL!!! Don't do it...tell your hubby NO out of the question!!!!
  4. The guy who advertises the company had his identity stolen. That should tell you everything you need to know.
  5. funny you mentioned Lifelock. This company is currently under fire with consumer complaints due to the credit bureaus not stopping thief's from stealing their identity. The creator of Lifelock actually has commercials and ads where he shows his real ssn and name. He also admitted in the article that he has had approx. 52 people obtain a drivers license in his name. I wouldn't want to deal with that. Keep your money and get the security freeze b/c as long as you keep the number active you provide you can apply for credit and then be contacted immediately for verification.
