What do you do if you have been a victim of ID theft?

A couple of years ago I was the victim of ID theft. Some woman was living and working under my SSN(I didn'y know her) and since then someone told me that in such circumstances one can apply for and get a new SSN. Is this true?

  1. yep. you ought've reported it though
  2. Yes. Call one of the credit companies (Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax) and they can tell you what exactly you need to do to get this straightened out.
  3. Here is the link on the SSA page for this: http://www.ssa.gov/oig/hotline/index.htm#idtheft I hope you get it straightened out. We went through something a little like this. We began getting collection notices for hundreds of dollars in bad checks written by someone with the same name as my husband. He lived a couple of counties away. We finally had to go to the sheriff's office in THAT county and get it straightened out. It was a mess.
