Someone broke into my car and stole my registration.?
I cant figure out why they stole this and my insurance id cards. I work in an area where there is a lot of crime ( near Oakland, CA) and I guess identity theft from immigrants. I cant understand what could be done with this info though. I mean name and address is a pretty public thing and easily found out. I closed and reopened different bank accounts, put a freeze on my credit (which is bad anyway), and am going to the dmv tomorrow. Is there any way they could use this legal document to help steal my identity? Or am i protected enough by freezing my credit? Forgot to mention that I already called the insurance agency and they did not think it was a big deal. The cards expire next month anyway.

- they know where you live, they know who insures you, they could call in a fraudulent claim. Call your agent. Set your burglar alarm.
- This happened around where I live, the thieves mostly just wanted to make it appear that their car registrations were up to date. ID theft for immigrants makes sense, though. Definitely call the police to let them know this is happening, if they don't already know, and they can keep an eye out for your registration, and you'll be a little more protected. You should call your insurance company as well.
- I hope you have made a police report on this. If not, DO IT now. You would be surprised what some of these "immigrants" (illegal?) can and will do... cover all of the bases and don't think of it as "No big deal". It could become a very big deal. Sounds tho, as if you did most of the things you need to do but keep in mind all of the personal info about you that they now have. With what they have, they can get even more.
- Whoever stole the papers could try to make a claim for an accident but you said you called your agency and informed them of the theft, so you don't need to worry about that. Your biggest concern should be that whoever stole the papers now knows where you live.
